Amender Campbell graduated in 2014 and feels the rural GP pathway is the right fit for her.
Amender relocated to Mackay to do years five and six of her studies and did hospital based rotations such as mental health, general practice, surgery, medical, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics. "These rotations were very in depth and very, very interesting and rewarding", she said.
In 2013 Amender opted to do her clinical elective in remote Charleville and was allocated Charters Towers for her rural intensive. "To say that Charleville was hot and dry when I first arrived is an understatement. Even for a bushie like me, it was hot! The clinical elective was amazing and the bush hospitality is still as real as ever. I was included in all aspects of health service provision here and was given an extensive amount of clinical exposure and experience. I also have my John Flynn Scholarship Placement at Longreach to look forward to this year", she said.
Amender extends her heartfelt thanks to all of the supporters of her journey so far. "The AMA Queensland Foundation scholarship has literally kept me on the road. This is the scholarship that keeps my car registered and insured and also helps cover some of my text books. Without this, I would not have been able to drive to Charleville and have the benefit of my own wheels", explains Amender.
When asked what advice or wise words she would share with other students and recent graduates Amender says, "Be consistent. Consistency with study and with attending placement really pays off, and be generous to your colleagues. These are the people that really support you when the going gets tough".
