AMA Queensland Foundation Medical Student Scholarships

AMA Queensland Foundation Medical Student Scholarships support medical students experiencing financial hardship.

Since 2004, the AMA Queensland Foundation has provided over $575 000 in financial assistance to 39 medical students suffering financial hardship while studying in Queensland. Scholarships are offered to assist financially disadvantaged medical students to study the MBBS, MD course or equivalent at a university in Queensland.

  • One-off award of $10,000 paid in two equal instalments.
  • Free AMA Queensland student membership for the duration of the degree.
  • All applicants are eligible to reapply in subsequent years.
  • Three scholarships were awarded for 2025, plus an additional Sponsor one Student recipient.

  1. Complete the online application form
  2. Collate your supporting documentation and get it CERTIFIED by a Justice of the Peace or other authorised person.

Our 2025 recipients were Rheannon Griffin, Alexandra Green, Noah Steel, and Ann Vincent (supported by the Indian Medical Association Queensland (IMAQ) under the Foundation’s Sponsor one Student program).

More about the scholarship

Eligibility

To be eligible for an AMA Queensland Foundation medical student scholarship an applicant must:

  • Be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent visa holder.
  • Have commenced the MBBS, or MD program at a Queensland university.
  • Have a GPA of 4.0 or above.
  • Demonstrate financial disadvantage.
  • Demonstrate evidence of personal effort to address his/her financial need i.e. has the applicant applied for Centrelink assistance via start-up or relocation grant? Has the applicant considered other scholarship options? Does the applicant’s family have the financial capacity to offer support?
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student. In exceptional circumstances, a scholarship may be provided to a part-time student (e.g. taking into account requirements to undertake employment to maintain financial solvency, the impact of disability and/or significant care responsibilities, etc.)
  • Provide a suitable referee who may support the request for financial assistance.
     

Conditions of Scholarship

  • To retain an AMA Queensland Foundation scholarship, the recipient must remain in good academic standing with a GPA of 4.0 or above. If a student is excluded from study under any university policy, the scholarship is suspended.
  • The recipient must be an AMA Queensland member
  • Recipients are encouraged to become an AMA Queensland ambassador and assist where possible at student events/orientations and AMA Queensland Community Health Hubs within their region.
  • Prior to receipt of the second instalment, recipients will be asked to provide a progress update and images to the AMA Queensland Foundation on the activities they have performed, and personal accounts of how the scholarship has aided their situation.
  • Recipients consent to their updates being used in AMA Queensland publications.
  • In the event that the recipient is granted an approved leave of absence, the scholarship shall be suspended for a maximum of twelve months.
  • The recipient must not be in receipt of the Centrelink Start-Up or Relocation Grant; a Commonwealth or State Scholarship; or an Indigenous Access Scholarship.
  • The recipient must hold an AMA Queensland student membership. If you aren't already a member of AMA Queensland, you can join for FREE on the AMA Queensland website.

Help with the application process

Our application processes assess your suitability for assistance under circumstances of financial, personal or medical hardship. To ensure that we understand your situation completely, we ask that you supply a range of supporting information to enable the AMA Queensland Foundation to make an informed and just decision from our pool of applicants. Here is a list of the relevant information you will need to provide when completing the online application form:

  • University and course details
  • Centrelink eligibility for means-tested income support payment
  • Details of other scholarships or, bursaries you are in receipt of (including Indigenous Access
  • Scholarships, Centrelink relocation and student start up scholarships)
  • Your income details before and after tax and those of your partner (if you have one)
  • The dollar value of your government support payments and those of your partner
  • Any other sources of income
  • Your expenditure per fortnight and those of your partner
  • Total dollar value of your assets (e.g. bank accounts, superannuation) and those of your partner if applicable.

After completing your online application, please email the AMA Queensland Foundation with the below supporting documentation [email protected] prior to the deadline 28 February 2026 5pm AEST. 

  • A certified copy of your proof of Citizenship or permanent Visa
  • Your current Curriculum Vitae
  • A certified copy of your academic records
  • A certified copy of your documented financial situation and gross household income reported to the Australian Tax Office for the previous financial year
  • A certified copy of your Centrelink income statement letter if relevant.

Frequently asked questions

What does a ‘’certified’ copy of a document mean? 
Certification refers to a legally certified copy of a document. An acceptable authorised person (referee) must endorse the copy of your document. and must be confident that the copy is a true copy of the original., signing and stamping the document. Who is able to certify my documents?
A justice of the peace or authorised person such as a licensed medical practitioner, legal practitioner, police officer or other authorised person.  Get guidance on authorised persons here

Can I apply if I have completed undergraduate studies?
Yes, we will accept applications from post graduate students, you must be studying medicine and be attending a Queensland University.

How do I prove my citizenship?
By providing a certified copy of an Australian or New Zealand passport, or Permanent Visa documentation.

Will you accept an Unofficial Transcript?
Yes, as long as it is certified. 

Can I apply if I have received Centrelink Start Up Loan, Indigenous Access Scholarship or Centrelink Relocation?
Yes, please state in the application form any support you have received.

Can I apply if I am an international student?
Applicants must be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent visa holder.
