Driven by a passion for rural healthcare, Alexandra Green is deeply committed to serving rural North Queensland upon graduating from James Cook University (JCU).

Growing up in a low-income household in Bendigo, Victoria, her path to studying medicine has been anything but easy.

“When I finished school, I wanted to study medicine, but my family couldn’t afford to support me for that degree, and I could not support myself financially,” Alexandra said.

Instead, she pursued paramedicine, graduating with a Bachelor of Public Health and a Bachelor of Paramedicine from La Trobe University in 2014.

After graduating, Alexandra moved to Queensland where she worked as a paramedic in the small rural town of Giru, North Queensland – a role that left a deep impression on her.

“Working in Giru exposed me to the critical shortage of healthcare services in rural communities and inspired me to study medicine at JCU,” she said.

Now in her fifth year, Alexandra is determined to become a rural generalist and GP and looks forward to dedicating her career to improving healthcare access in North Queensland.

“My firsthand experience as a paramedic in an underserved rural community reinforced my commitment to rural medicine,” she said.

“Living and working in a small town showed me the profound impact that a dedicated practitioner can have, not only in delivering medical care but also in advocating for community needs.

In 2022, while pursuing her medical degree, she commenced a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at JCU, motivated by a vision to further develop her ability to address public health challenges in the regions.

“This will enable me to provide a more comprehensive approach to healthcare in rural and remote areas,” she said.

Studying medicine can be difficult without financial support, and for Alexandra, the scholarship will significantly relieve her financial stress, helping to cover essential living expenses and educational resources needed to complete her degree.

“Financially, I have exhausted my savings to support my education, and while my family offer emotional support, they cannot contribute financially to my studies,” she said.
Due to Alexandra’s previous degree, she is ineligible for Austudy, and as a full-time student with extensive placement hours, has limited opportunities to work.

At the time of applying for a Medical Student Scholarship, she was confronted with the difficult choice of either taking a leave of absence or working additional hours – potentially compromising her academic performance.

“This scholarship will allow me to focus entirely on my studies and clinical placements and fulfill my goal of becoming a dedicated rural medical practitioner in the North Queensland community,” she said.
