Research and training bursaries now available for Queensland General Practice Fellows and General Practice Registrars

The AMA Queensland Foundation's annual GPTQ Research and Training Bursaries for Queensland General Practice Specialists (GPs) and General Practice Registrars (GPRs) are now open for application. The bursaries, initiated to honour the legacy of General Practice Training Queensland (GPTQ) aim to increase the quality of healthcare and attract and retain GPs in areas of need.

Up to three $20,000 research and training bursaries are available in 2026 for Queensland GPs and GPRs wanting to undertake research addressing topics relevant to general practice, or those looking to train in under-served or rural areas.

Foundation Chair Dr Eleanor Chew OAM said the bursaries are designed to recognise the crucial role GPs play in delivering accessible, community centred care and to ensure the specialty remains strong across Queensland.

"At a time when the demands on general practice continue to grow, supporting the development and sustainability of our GP workforce has never been more important."

“We urge all GPs to put themselves forward for these bursaries. General practice remains an essential cornerstone of our healthcare system,” she said.

Applications close at 5pm AEST Wednesday 30 September 2026. Details are available here.

Background of the bursary

GPTQ delivered the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) training program in Queensland for 20 years, supporting doctors to achieve recognition as GPs.

In 2023 GP training transitioned into College-led GP training and GPTQ ceased operations.

AMA Queensland Foundation successfully applied for funding to continue the GPTQ legacy to provide GPs with training and research opportunities and launched the bursary in 2023

Furthering general practice in Queensland

Since its inception the AMA Queensland Foundation has provided $220,000 in support for 11 GP Specialists and GP Registrars to undertake training and research.
