The Townsville Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN) will deliver Hope on the Hill, a large-scale community event designed to raise awareness of suicide prevention, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and strengthen community connection across the Townsville region.

Established in 2015, TSPN is a community-led network that brings together community organisations, mental health services, government representatives, people with lived experience, and local stakeholders committed to reducing suicide. Guided by its mission to raise awareness, listen to communities and take collective action, the network works to promote help-seeking behaviours, improve awareness of available services, reduce stigma, and support people impacted by suicide and bereavement.

The initiative has been developed in response to the ongoing impact of suicide across North Queensland. Regional communities continue to experience significant challenges, with stigma, limited awareness of support options and social isolation often preventing people from seeking help. These issues can leave individuals and families vulnerable and highlight the need for coordinated, community-driven approaches to suicide prevention.

Funding will support the delivery of Hope on the Hill, a community event centred around a walk up Townsville's iconic Castle Hill. The event will bring together community members, local organisations, sporting clubs, volunteers and support services in a safe and welcoming environment focused on hope, wellbeing and connection. Participants will have opportunities to hear from guest speakers, connect with mental health and wellbeing organisations, access information and learn about available support services.

The event aims to create an open and visible space where conversations about mental health and suicide prevention are encouraged and normalised. Through community engagement activities, service provider stalls and opportunities for connection, participants will gain a better understanding of suicide prevention, postvention and bereavement support while strengthening relationships within the community.

The primary populations being supported include the broader Townsville community, with particular efforts to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, young people, people with lived experience of suicide, defence veterans, and other groups that may face increased vulnerability or barriers to support.

Hope on the Hill will serve as TSPN's flagship community event and is intended to become an annual initiative that complements the network's ongoing suicide prevention workshops and community activities throughout the year. By bringing people together to share stories, build connections and increase awareness of available supports, the initiative aims to foster a stronger, more informed and more resilient community.

Through collaboration, education and community engagement, the Townsville Suicide Prevention Network continues its commitment to creating a culture where seeking help is encouraged, mental health conversations are supported, and every member of the community feels connected, valued and hopeful.
