NPA Men’s Network will deliver a community-led initiative aimed at improving mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention outcomes for men, families and communities across the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA).

The organisation is guided by the vision of “Strong men, strong culture, strong community” and is committed to empowering men through culturally grounded programs that strengthen wellbeing, build skills and create pathways to employment. Through connection to Country, mentoring, cultural activities and workforce development opportunities, NPA Men’s Network supports improved social and emotional wellbeing while contributing to Closing the Gap outcomes.

The initiative has been developed following extensive consultation with Elders and community members, which identified a range of challenges affecting men across the region. Key concerns include limited access to culturally appropriate programs, barriers to transport and participation, disconnection from land and sea Country, limited local employment pathways, and a need for greater support around mental health and wellbeing.

Community feedback also highlighted strong demand for on-Country cultural programs, structured engagement opportunities for men and young people, practical training and employment pathways, and initiatives that promote mental health and social connection in culturally safe ways.

Funding will be used to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to support people experiencing mental health concerns or suicidal ideation through staff training, mentoring activities, community engagement events and stronger referral pathways to health and wellbeing services. The project will deliver culturally appropriate initiatives including yarning circles, cultural activities, peer support opportunities and on-Country experiences that encourage connection, healing and resilience.

The program will also increase awareness of mental health and suicide prevention services, promote healthy masculinity as a protective factor against suicide, and create opportunities for men to build supportive relationships and seek help early. By combining cultural connection, mentoring and wellbeing activities, the initiative aims to reduce stigma and improve access to support for those who may otherwise face barriers to services.

The primary population being supported is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men living across the Northern Peninsula Area, including young men, adults, families and carers. The project will particularly benefit people living in remote communities where access to services can be limited and where culturally safe, community-led approaches are vital to achieving positive wellbeing outcomes.

By strengthening local capacity, enhancing existing services and creating place-based opportunities for connection and support, NPA Men’s Network is helping build stronger, healthier and more resilient communities. The initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to ensuring men remain connected to culture, Country and community while accessing the support, skills and opportunities needed to thrive.
