The Australia National Chinese Women's Federation (ANCWF) will deliver a new community wellbeing initiative, "Thrive Together: Mental Health Awareness and Community Connection," aimed at improving mental health awareness and strengthening social connections among Chinese and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in Brisbane.
The not-for-profit organisation, which supports migrant Chinese women and their families across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, works to promote wellbeing, social inclusion and empowerment through culturally appropriate programs, bilingual support, education and community engagement activities. ANCWF is committed to reducing social isolation, improving access to health and community services, and fostering stronger, more connected communities.
The initiative has been developed in response to ongoing challenges faced by many Chinese and CALD community members, who often encounter barriers when seeking mental health information and support. Language differences, cultural stigma surrounding mental illness, limited awareness of available services and social isolation can prevent people from accessing help when they need it. Older adults, new migrants, carers and people with limited English proficiency are particularly vulnerable to loneliness, stress, anxiety and depression.
Through three free community sessions at Sunnybank Community Centre between September 2026 and June 2027, participants will receive practical information about mental health, suicide prevention, local support services and strategies for maintaining wellbeing. Delivered in both English and Chinese, the sessions will feature presentations from qualified health professionals, interactive discussions, question-and-answer opportunities, community networking activities, and access to culturally appropriate mental health resources and information.
The program will also help connect participants with local support services, provide opportunities to build social networks, and create a welcoming environment where people can openly discuss wellbeing and learn how to seek help when needed. By combining education with community connection, the initiative aims to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and encourage early intervention and support-seeking behaviours.
By increasing awareness, improving access to information, and strengthening community connections, Thrive Together will empower participants to take positive steps towards their mental wellbeing while contributing to a more resilient, informed and connected CALD community. The initiative reflects ANCWF's ongoing commitment to ensuring people from diverse cultural backgrounds feel supported, valued and confident in accessing the services and resources they need to thrive.
